>The 53-year-old Canadian was sentenced to 40 months in prison in the US and instructed to cough up $14.5 million for his involvement in the group.
Bankruptcy worked for the Sackler Family, and they where involved with many deaths due to overdoses. But break DRM, you are in the hole for the rest of your life and you get Jail time.
Too big to jail. One must commit crimes large or legitimized enough while not targeting other connected rich people as did Madoff and SBF. Trump, Cheney, Kissinger, Epstein, and most of Wall St. and corporate America.
Large (capable) law firms would not want to associate themselves with the underdog in this case. Either because they want to avoid conflict of interest, or confidentiality matters as they likely already have an ongoing relationship with the company initiating the lawsuit. Or simply that the bigger guy paid them to "counsel" and now they have to recuse themselves due to this "relationship".
The smaller guy also likely isn't rich enough to pay for a major law firm either. The game is stacked completely against the individuals going solo against the megacorps. There is no way to win.
The worst law firm in this country in my eyes is K&L Gates. A black executive known for speaking up on racism, sexism, etc# went a bit too far when he blew the whistle on a large cybersecurity incident.
He wound up in jail for making threats.
The whole thing was a sham.
It's frightening to think about but one man at the helm of a major law firm has more power and influence in changing policy than any one elected official in washington.
This is some dystopian cyberpunk shit people a few decades ago would read in a fiction and think "scary but would not happen for real"...
And the fact is, we all know what this means, what would likely to happen next, and that we are all powerless to stop it. No wonder the younger generations are severely depressed.
How does this work? Is there no interest over this 14m us dollars?. That alone would be 500.000 per year. Can you not file for a personal bankruptcy? I find this life long sentence of paying an impossible amount way too harsch. He would better flee to Russia or something and try to rebuild something. His life is in chains now.
The money is irrelevant. An example to deter future attempts is what this is. They are crucifying this guy in the most cruel manner they could and spread the news as much as they can for a reason.
