The point is for when you're not home, it can automatically shut down your PC. It's actually quite useful if you happen to have a home lab. The nicer units can monitor temperature and humidity and send you an email if they exceed specified limits, which can be VERY useful if you live in a flood prone area, for example.


I'm sure it's useful for some, but not most.

I have a homelab of a few servers, with a nice rackmount UPS, and I decided data connection to the UPS is more risk than good, in my case.

Environmental monitoring doesn't have to be part of the UPS. And APC has long made separate devices for that, for data centers/racks. In addition to the modern IoT home devices.


Oh sure, I'm just thinking in the realm of HN... perhaps it's more common than average! But having a networked UPS is non-negotiable for me, as far as I'm concerned it's no use if the servers power off hard anyways. It's on a VLAN without internet access so really not much risk either.
