"...but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft."

That's how it all went wrong and best to avoid their products as far as possible https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenAI#Transition_to_for-profi...

When vulture capital and/or surveillance capital gets involved enshittification begins https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys

For those who love to still hate Twitter and won't click the link:

>> OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all. - Elon Musk

That was also my original impression of OpenAI when it first launched and many others in [0] Was supposed to be a non-profit, open-source and countering DeepMind's closed AI. Now it is the exact opposite of all of that and is almost essentially a Microsoft-owned AI division.

OpenAI might as well rename to ClosedAI or just get itself fully acquired by Microsoft given its investment and exclusivity deals.

As soon as it transitioned to a for-profit, it became another VC scam.

Musk intended absolutely the same, just that it would be controlled by him, instead of someone else. Juts look at his actions (e.g. Twitter).
