A Cyberattack Illuminates the Shaky State of Student Privacy (nytimes.com)

It does make me feel a little relieved that I finshed education just before schools started computerising everything and social media took off. Had I been only 5 years later, the video of the fight I got into aged 12 would have been on youtube, school monitored laptops would have left me with little freedom to meet some people who are now my best friends (because talking to strangers online on a video game forum would have been considered "not best practice", even if it worked out in my case), and all the data about my education would have been at risk of breaches like this.

I think it's inevitable that once this data is out there it will get used too, especially in the US where privacy protections are lower, but even in the land of GDPR I've encountered some recruiters emailing me at addresses that they could only have obtained because the companies they use to source emails ingested the Gravatar leak.
