I've left Gmail and Google Apps (with my domain) long ago. If you need to pay anyway and are looking for email I recommend Microsoft Exchange Online. They're doing a shit job in marketing it, but $4 a month for Exchange email with immediate push to iPhone/iPad etc, good anti spam filtering and no Google profile building is worth it for me.
