The problem I have with giving homework assignments, at least with junior candidates in India, is that very often they just cheat. In one case, the candidate had his college instructor help him answer the questions over the phone, and do the homework assignment. When we brought the candidate in, it took about all of 30sec to realize that the person who had solved the problems over the phone and the person attending the interview were not the same.
