I don't understand why all of these Reader replacements require signup to see the site.

I haven't tried most of them for this reason.

It's possible to monetize page views without users being signed in.

You can combine as many feeds as you want.

I am working on making the UI more user friendly and adding OPML import/export.

It's going to be supported by advertising with a subscription service for premium features and no ads.

I was attracted by the basic looking design, but I can't work out how to do anything. Why am I subscribed to a huge number of random feeds? How do I get rid of them? How do I view the content of the feed instead of opening a new window on the original site?

If you haven't added any feeds to your favorites then viewing 'My Favorites' shows all feeds by default.

Still working on the UI to show the article content and links to attached files.

I like the predictive aspect Personally, I'm looking for something with a GR atom API, possibly to even run the existing GR frontend against, not a new UI with a different focus (I would prefer one focusing on curation and workflow over social or sharing).

You should make an intelligent feed updating algorithm.

If you have at least fifty previous entries from a feed it's easy to predict fairly accurately when that feed will need to be updated again.

That's how the indexer for http://rssident.com works. Saves you tons of cpu cycles.

Most blog providers support pubsubhubbub(the worst protocol name ever). It allows you to avoid polling, by having the content producer notify you of feed updates.

Except that, even with PSHB, you get polling. I wrote about it here http://www.dp.cx/blog/pubsubhubbub-and-polling.html#.UUcPWLp...

The fact that two feed clients, Superfeedr and Guzzle, implement PuSH wrong in no way leads to the conclusion that, when creating a feed reader, you can avoid polling for every content source that does support PuSH.

The UI needs work but it is very simple.

Scalability will not be an issue. It was designed from the start to be scalable. Just add servers.

Got it the first time you posted on this story ;)

The search features were built specifically for searching Craigslist.

The UI is not the most intuitive or user friendly yet but we are working on it.

As far as I can tell there's no way to import an OPML file, which is my entire use case. Am I missing it?

Also just FYI, after signing up, I'm booted back to the sign-in form with no indication of whether the signup was successful or what; I actually assumed it had failed.

I am working on the OPML import. That's the highest priority currently. Might take me a week or so to add it though because I am busy for the next few days.

The feedback to the user during signup and login is totally lacking. I know it needs work.

There are a lot of improvements I am going to add to the UI to make it more user friendly.

Thanks for the feedback. I am open to all suggestions and will add features as I have time.

It does none of the things you mention but you might like it anyway.

i am surprised. rssident looks really simple and promising on my smartphone as a mobile page! can you give any background!? when did you start!?

i like the one big feed directly on the start page. i like the the simple layout in my mobile browser.

i don't need fancy sharing features. all i need is a simple webapp that shows me a condensed view of my subscriptions and opml import.

if these things work there is also no need for a specialized android or mobile app, i think.

(oh, mobile sign up didn't work somehow for me, maybe you check the code...)

Glad you like it. I started working on it about four years ago. It's been online for about a year.

I am working on opml import and making it easier / more intuitive to add feeds.

I have had trouble with the signup form for the last few days which was the worst time for it to fail. I thought I had the bug fixed yesterday but I will double check.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a work in progress but I am going to keep improving it.

If you have anymore suggestions I am open to all feedback.

I think I figured out the issue. Did you try to register with username toki.net?

Apparently the validator on the username field doesn't like periods. I will fix that.

yeah and nope, toki.net was not my first but my third try.

i am somehow not able to login with two different browsers (opera mobile and chrome) to log in. only firefox worked.

my new account there is "toki1". but i havent been able to add feeds somehow. the input box does not to react when i click submit.

feel free to use me as test user. contact me via the mail i gave with my account data. i am rather busy today, but from tomorrow on i will have more time.... :)

I built it for many of the reasons you stated. I also wanted to be able to do specific kinds of search (All craigslist telecommute Java jobs in the US -- http://rssident.com/mash/?t=job&e=telecommute).

It still needs a lot of work but I plan to keep it relatively simple and useful.
