Great. It is the only company that has not participated in PRISM.

Try Tonido (http://www.tonido.com). It is not open source though.

Replacing dropbox is an easy task. Have u tried tonido (http://www.tonido.com)

A lot of your short comment history is about Tonido. If you're affiliated with them in some way, you should disclose it when you talk about them on HN.

That is neither self-hosted nor free open-source from a quick look at it.

It is self-hosted but it is not open source. Does it have to be an open source solution?

The Death of Local Storage is near? Really?

I would rather consolidate my data using personal cloud solutions like Tonido rather than spreading my personal data across multiple cloud storage services.

You see what you just said? You said a perfectly legitimate alternative that most tech-savvy people (i.e. most of this site's userbase) will understand. That ditzy girl you hit on last week at the bar, some weird fruity drink in one hand, iPhone in the other? She wouldn't understand. She does, however, understand using her Dropbox to store all her photos from Instagram at the push of a button on Instagram's website...or some other possibility, I don't know.

I'll never have the cloud as my be-all end-all backup for media and the like but your average moron who dabbles in ten different applications' "social networks" will eat it up.

I like the file preview UI design in your app. Quite unique and very useful. Hopefully other apps copies that design pattern as well.

Glad you noticed :). It took couple of months of our designer and iOS developer time.

Classic power brokers in play. Get the investments from influential people. Build a decent product. They will sell the company for you. No need to have traction. No challenge as well.

Dude. you don't have new idea how much one need to go through to get a Green card (Especially people from China and India).

I have friends who have been waiting for more than 10 years in queue to get that. All the 10 years they have to be a slave for a corporate sponsor.

You know what: It is not really helping anybody. Not the people who involved in the process or America.

I use duplicity with my tonido home server for my backups. Tonido is also a webdav server. Duplicity works well With Tonido.

If trends like this continue there is good potential for selfhosted personal clouds.

Definitely.

I've been doing it for years. You can use a WebDAV share in Apache and mount it from Windows XP and above. That's pretty much DropBox with COTS software there.

I switched to Skydrive in 2009 though as it's just easier and it (at the time) supposed machine->machine replication with Live Mesh.
