Maybe a dumb question: if I'm entering a QR code, which info do i put in?

That will vary. It can technically include any text up to a limit, but most likely it will be a URI, but it could be as simple as and account number. You would want to decode the QR (you can likely do that using your phone camera) and that would be the data to enter.

Ideally this tool would simply use the camera to capture the visual code (bar, QR, etc.) and enter it/replicate it.


agree. implemented QR code scanning using the great html5-qrdecode package so scanning happens locally.

I like the concept but feel kinda dumb: how do I add an action?

The film industry has a lot of unions as well, including for their "above average" people (writers, actors, etc.)


I think most engineers/developers/scientists would welcome, or at least be fine with, being a member of a guild like writers and actors. Their parent poster is suggesting that a traditional US union is the way, which I personally don't agree with and don't think I am unique in that regard.


To be honest, I'm not sure I know the difference. I got invited to SAG-AFTRA after doing a TV commercial and it seemed pretty union-y to me. Not that it's inherently a bad thing, and maybe I'm wrong in that there are differences but not aware of them.

Could you say more about the differences you see between a traditional US union and a modern day guild?


What I meant is that something like SAG-AFTRA provides some benefits and sets minimum standards for a work environment but does not limit your ability to negotiate a higher rate for your work, does not require promotion (whatever that would mean in this context) based on seniority, etc.

In the US, doctors, lawyers, and to some extent professional engineers and other licensed professions operate under a somewhat similar model in that they restrict supply of that class of labor through some sort of accreditation, apply minimum standards for the profession, and otherwise stay out of your business for the most part.


I wonder if it's just creeping apathy, post-covid, current-AI boom. That we're just tired in life. There's a psych study, Dimensional Apathy Scale (DAS)[0] and one of the questions is basically "How much do I contact my friends?" I think it argues that the more apathy we feel, the less likely we are to reach out to others, and I imagine, the less likely we are to react or reply to comments (or even post).

I'm curious if the decline in reacting is matched by a decline in replying and posting in general.

The crypto train kinda ran out of steam, so all aboard the AI train.

That being said, I think AI has a lot more immediately useful cases than cryptocurrency. But it does feel a bit overhyped by people who stand to gain a tremendous amount of money.

I might get slammed/downvoted on HN for this, but really wondering how much of VC is filled with get-rich-quick cheerleading vs supporting products that will create strong and lasting growth.


I don't think you really need to wonder about how much is cheer leading. Effectively all of VC public statements will be cheer leading for companies they already invested in.

The more interesting one is the closed door conversations. Earlier this year, for example, it seemed there was a pattern of VCs heavily invested in AI asking the other software companies they invested in to figure out how to make AI useful for them and report back. I.e. "we invested heavily in hype, tell us how to make it real."


From my perspective, having worked in both industries and simply following my passions and opportunities, all I see is that the same two bandwagons who latched onto crypto either to grift or just egotistically talk shit have moved over to the latest technological breakthrough, meanwhile those of us silently working on interesting things are consantly rolling our eyes over comments from both sides of the peanut gallery.

I'm reflecting more these days on what I call "trust inequality." I'm curious how much trust in each other relates to wealth. Any thoughts?


What does trust inequality mean to you?

But initial take is that some environments people trust each other more. Trusting intentions, actions, words, ability. For example, a low-trust environment would probably be most prisons. High-trust might be a neighborhood where people don't lock their doors.

I remember reading a World Bank economist saying that we might be able to explain the difference in GDP per capita between the US and a place like Somalia based on how much people trust each other. How mistrust can add so much friction to interactions.


There's a lot of research in this area. You might not like the conclusions.

Just tested this with ChatGPT, asking for Sam Altman’s mother’s maiden name.

At first, it told me that it will absolutely not provide me with such sensitive private information, but after insisting a few times, it came back with

Yet in the very same reply, ChatGPT continued to insist that its stance will not change and that it will not be able to assist me with such queries.

That particular jailbreak isn't sufficient to get it to hallucinate maiden names of less famous individuals though (web search is disabled, so it's just LLM output we're using).

To date, with every LLM, if I actually know the domain in depth, the interactions are always with me pushing back with facts at hand and the LLM doing the "You are right! Thanks for correcting me!"

No not really, if you examine what it's replacing. Humans have a lot of flaws too and often make the same mistakes repeatedly. And compared to a machine they're incredibly expensive and slow.

Part of it may be that with LLMs you get the mistake back in an instant, where with the human it might take a week. So ironically the efficiency of the LLM makes it look worse because you see more mistakes.

To make this crystal clear: Human geniuses were flawed beings but generally you would expect highly reliable utility from their minds. Einstein would not unexpetedly let you down when discussing physics. Gauss would kick ass reliably in terms of mathematics. etc. etc. (This analysis is still useful when we lower the expectations to graduated levels, from genius to brilliant to highly capable to the lower performance tiers, so we can apply it to society as a whole.)

You seem to be having a different conversataion here. I'm comparing work output by two sources and saying this is why people are choosing to use on over the other for day to day tasks. I'm not waxing poetic about the greater impact to society at large when a new productivity source is introduced.

Sure, but you're ignoring the fact most work does not require a "generationally exceptional specimen". Most of us are not Einstein.

Human beings have patterns of behavior that varies from person to person. This is such an established fact that the concept of personal character is a universal and not culturally centered.

(Deterministic) machines and men fail in regular patterns. This is the "human flaws" that you mentioned. It is true that you do not have to be Einstein but the point was missed or not clearly stated. Whether an Einstein or a Joe Random, a person can be observed and we can gauge the capacity of the individual for various tasks. Einstein can be relied upon if we need input on Physics. Random Joe may be an excellent carpenter. Jill writes clearly. Jack is good at organizing people, etc.

So while it is certainly true that human beings are flawed and capabilities are not evenly distributed, they are fairly deterministic components of a production system. Even 'dumb' machines fail in certain characteristic manner, after certain lifetime of service. We know how to make reliable production systems using parts that fail according to patterns.

None of this is true for langauge models and the "AI" built around them. One prompt and your model is "brilliant" and yet entirely possibly it will completely drop the ball in the next sequence. The failure patterns are not deterministic. There is no model, as of now, that would permit the same confidence that we have in building 'fault tolerant systems' using deterministically unreliable/failing parts. None.

Yet every aspect of (cognitive components of) human society is being forcibly affected to incorporate this half-baked technology.
