I can usually activate Google Now from a few feet away on my Moto X (2013) but it can't understand what I'm asking after that. I have to get much closer for it to work.

Makes sense I guess. The "listen for the trigger" bit is done locally on those Motos (I've got the 2014 variant) but really all it needs to do is keep an "ear" open for that one phrase so it's probably got a better margin, only helped by local processing. The bit of audio that comprises the query has to get compressed and interpreted on the server side (not to mention the fact that it consists of a much wider variety of possible content to be parsed) so that can't help. I guess a dedicated chip that's just constantly asking "did anyone say 'OK Google?" has an easier job than a remote process asking "wtf does that fuzzy bit of compressed audio mean?"

(obviously being silly and oversimplifying but same idea)

I also work on a payroll system (Rails/postgresql) based that's used for internal company use with hundreds of employees and multiple states. The hardest part is the taxes and benefits that's handled by external vendors.

It works great for the Win8 'Apps', but not regular windows applications (Firefox, Adobe, etc) for my setup. Probably something taking over my shortcuts.

That's an interesting issue... I've never had an issue on Windows 7 or 8 using the [Start} + arrow key to set a normal window to half-screen.

Do you use any productivity enhancing system tools?

I did some searching and found this link. It seems like the NYT piece was just a PR piece for the lawyer.

I've also been trying to connect a few times tonight. No luck over the last 3-4 hours.

I have a migration scheduled in a couple of days and this is getting scary. The 7th is the last day for migrations and these attacks are making it much harder for my to do any maintenance and last checks before that happens.

I also use this add-on. While FF has the options too, the add-on allows me to easily access all the features and see all the details that I want to see.

The most important feature is that it's easy and quick.

A watch is good for utility and fashion/status symbol, however I would argue that a smart phone is not remotely on the same level as a watch.

An iPhone or any phone isn't going to make statement compared to an IWC or Patek or most watches.

I have the Thinkpad X22, X40, T40, T60p, X61t. After the X61t, I saw nothing remotely compelling from their Thinkpad line.

I think the high point of the Thinkpad line was around the T61/X61t. They were fast, durable and had nice high resolution display.

I was desperately waiting for an update to my X61t w/ 1400x1050 display and no such option come from them and after many years, still none! Such a disappointment.

I saw the photos in the article and then noticed they removed the trackpad buttons. They're moving away from why I liked them before.. that's fine, but they're not making big enough hardware improvements to offset those changes.

The Thinkpad X1 Carbon is 1600x900. Surprised that is not that well-known, as you're the second person on this thread I've noticed with that misconception. I upgraded from my old X200s to the X1 Carbon and it's great.

1600x900 is lower than 1920x1200 and even lower than 1680x1050, which older models had. It's also lower than 2880x1800 found in a competitor model. It is also a TN display, not an IPS one.

I've been wanting this model for months. How is the video performance on it? Movies, games etc?

I'm going to say "fine", as I've honestly never noticed an issue at all. I still do video editing on my desktop as it's way faster. I don't play games, so I can't answer that one for you.

From my understanding and observations when I visited Japan for a couple of weeks, Japanese people don't eat/drink/smoke while walking. Even for outside vendors, they will eat it on a nearby bench or stand and eat it before moving again.

I did see smokers often in the smoking areas. More than I see in NYC.

>Japanese people don't eat/drink/smoke while walking.

What about all those Japanese schoolgirls that run to school with a piece of toast hanging out of their mouths because they overslept?
