There's obviously a massive difference between using sockpuppet accounts to:
* Influence perception on a social media platform as a 3rd party
vs.
* Put content on a social media platform that users are looking for so they return to the platform
It doesn't matter who shares a story with you on social media if the goal is to entertain, but it does matter if the goal is to get you to do something [spend money on their courses]
The "value" of Reddit as a platform is knowing that people ORGANICALLY liked content. Otherwise, just go to an aggregator. These sock puppet accounts were there to deceive, no doubt. Obviously, they are "different" in some ways, but deceptive nonetheless.
Any troll or shitposter who can't operate extremely effectively on HN isn't very good at it.
The site basically has a house style for those activities, and you can go crazy insulting and stirring people up all day long and not get moderated for it, as long as you stick to the approved style. Bonus: if you're not just half-competent, but actually good, you can probably get people calling you out on your behavior moderated, if they don't beat around the bush about it in just the right ways! That's why the majority of posts on here are trolling and shitposting, or fallout thereof.
If you stay under the moderation radar, trolling this place is like shooting fish in a barrel, even easier than most sites (no, I've not done it, but it's very obviously most of what goes on here). If the site cared about this, it'd have ignore-lists.
That sounds like a distinction without a difference. The point of the guidelines isn’t about the specific words chosen; it’s about making meta-complaints about HN itself.
The author's picture is available in the article, he's not exactly Henry Cavill. Not sure what makes you think that's a requirement for hosting a successful social event
Everyone here tries way too hard to emulate the Musks of the world as if their political beliefs were the reason those guys initially got so rich and successful.
