"Damaged a bunch of UK Military's planes" == spray painted two planes

Spray painting a jet engine causes millions in damages, but it's a cute sleight of hand to insinuate it's just some graffiti on a wall or something.

You don't actually know how much it cost, you just believe what the police say despite the fact that they've provided no figures.

Sockpuppet accounts are literally the foundation of Reddit [1]

Not a "gotcha"

There's obviously a massive difference between using sockpuppet accounts to:

* Influence perception on a social media platform as a 3rd party

vs.

* Put content on a social media platform that users are looking for so they return to the platform

It doesn't matter who shares a story with you on social media if the goal is to entertain, but it does matter if the goal is to get you to do something [spend money on their courses]

The "value" of Reddit as a platform is knowing that people ORGANICALLY liked content. Otherwise, just go to an aggregator. These sock puppet accounts were there to deceive, no doubt. Obviously, they are "different" in some ways, but deceptive nonetheless.

They didn't fake voting, they faked submissions.

So you could clearly tell if people liked or didn't like something.

Nothing about this forum is distinguished. Are you being serious? It's just reddit for tech nerds with the same problems

The moderation team makes all the difference in the world.

The moderation team makes no difference on how people here interact with each other and the posts.

It absolutely does

Any troll or shitposter who can't operate extremely effectively on HN isn't very good at it.

The site basically has a house style for those activities, and you can go crazy insulting and stirring people up all day long and not get moderated for it, as long as you stick to the approved style. Bonus: if you're not just half-competent, but actually good, you can probably get people calling you out on your behavior moderated, if they don't beat around the bush about it in just the right ways! That's why the majority of posts on here are trolling and shitposting, or fallout thereof.

If you stay under the moderation radar, trolling this place is like shooting fish in a barrel, even easier than most sites (no, I've not done it, but it's very obviously most of what goes on here). If the site cared about this, it'd have ignore-lists.

> Please don't post comments saying that HN is turning into Reddit. It's a semi-noob illusion, as old as the hills.

I didn't say it was turning into reddit, I said they suffer from the same problems

That sounds like a distinction without a difference. The point of the guidelines isn’t about the specific words chosen; it’s about making meta-complaints about HN itself.

Who ever said facial recognition wasn't going to threaten freedom? None of those points feel at all relevant or substantive to the topic of discussion

Most of people have no idea and are totally ok with being tracked 24/7

Notably trustworthy individual Marco Rubio

This statement was contradicted by Trump later in the day: "we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so,"

The author's picture is available in the article, he's not exactly Henry Cavill. Not sure what makes you think that's a requirement for hosting a successful social event

This is an LLM-ism.

Everyone here tries way too hard to emulate the Musks of the world as if their political beliefs were the reason those guys initially got so rich and successful.

There was a PBS doc about it too, CBS is just comprised

PBS funding has been cancelled.

Federal funding has been canceled for now. PBS still lives on and who knows what will happen with the next administration.

We are not the world police

I wonder if we'll get another Team America World Police movie after the coming invasion of Venezuela

Certainly not. Police aren't supposed to help the criminals
