The Slate Auto pickup will have plastic panels [0] - I assume they're not expecting to be shot down by the NTSB.

A bit late to the party.

Related also to the way Australians and New Zealanders use understatement for humorous effect, e.g. that last example you gave could be used to describe any condition up-to the point of death.

Some consumers clearly do care, but mega-corporations aren't content with making a profit - they will kill profitable products because they're not profitable enough.

(Apparently the 12 and 13 mini had about 5% of iPhone market share in the year they were released [0]. Does that mean they were profitable for Apple? I don't know, but given how many phones Apple sells, I believe that even 5% iPhone market share would be profitable)

Still using my 12 Mini on iOS 18 - I won't go without a fight.

Two extensions/patches I'd like to see for macOS:

1. Remove all icons from menus.

2. Make mouse-over do nothing - I should be able to move the mouse anywhere on the screen, and nothing should change colour/pop out etc.

In New Zealand, a hydroelectric dam was effectively build for an aluminium smelter [0]

Are you distinguishing between speech and writing? I'd agree on the former - that no-one talks that way.

Yeah - I’ve heard people say that the laptop lid (screen) is too thin for the sensors required to do proper FaceID (as opposed to just using the existing optical camera, which is easily fooled). But I don’t understand why the notch part of the screen just couldn’t be a bit deeper (and have a corresponding cutout on the bottom part of the laptop to accomodate it when the lid is closed). Then again, given how often the FaceID on my iPhone fails to recognise me…

trying turning off "require attention" for faceid on you phone..

and yeah, they can kill themselves making the iphone 17 air and a folding phone. but put an existing tech into a laptop? naw. not gonna do it.

'Hot spot' as in Settings->Personal Hotspot? I've had that enabled for more than 10 years, and could count the number of times I've found it off and had to turn it on again using one hand. Sounds like a regional/carrier-specific thing. I recall that in the early days, carriers could disable hotspot functionality on their network. I hear hotspot functionality is pretty broken on iOS 26 though.

GP’s behavior is what I see, it usually doesn’t shut itself off while I’m connected but once it’s on I have to act fast to get connected or it’ll shut itself off in a minute or two. And if I disconnect for a second, it’ll be off and I have to turn it on again. Really annoying the rare times I use it.

Been like this many versions, but dunno if it does it with the latest.

It sure what’s going on my side. Hotspot turns off almost as soon as there is no usage. I wonder if there is a way to debug that.

Just checked I’m on iOS 18.2.
