One of my older brother's friend was a great drawer and I remember him making very elaborate and impressively rendered animations using powerpoint when I was younger. He had a whole "series" going that I realize now, in hindsight, was an obvious DBZ knockoff. But, the creativity and the spirit of it all still stands out to me some 20 years later.
I do miss actionscript in FlashMX, where you could click on an entity you just drew and insert entity specific code, independent from the main script, which was at tied to a specific global frame.
It sounds horrendous now that I type it out, but ah it was such a free and chaotic way to program
The top has to have the ability and leeway for things to go wrong so that they can take risks. To make sure they take the right risks they are stakeing a % of their pay if its in options or bonuses as well as in their reputation.
> To make sure they take the right risks they are stakeing a % of their pay if its in options or bonuses as well as in their reputation.
Did you manage to hold a straight face while you wrote that? The people at the top still walk away with millions or more when they screw up. The people at the bottom walk away with very little. Whether the risks are worth taking is a good question, but certainly the people at the top don't feel the bulk of the pain if the risks don't pay off.
Fuck around or fuck up, and your compensation is only hit with a pillow. And people make excuses for how you failed at your responsibilities. Sounds nice.
If CEOs are afraid to take necessary risks because of consequences, they suck at their jobs as leaders and should be fired. CEOs need to know what they're doing, they shouldn't be given a lower bar to clear than everyone else. That they do is mindboggling.
I don't believe its the right system and the way it should be done but thats how accountability is viewed within the current system (which I think should change).
You might be right in the certain situations but this is an open tool with a wide array of possible uses for people. Such a pessimistic approach doesn't allow for any exploration when think about its potential uses.
Frankly, I don't really care. Really. It might be the greatest tool ever created..
There's too much great software and not enough head space to fit it all in.
This proliferation of tools and services hasn't achieved the proverbial "work less do more" which all of them promise.
They are necessary in order to deal with the increased complexity of technology (and our lives), but the catch is - once we integrate them into our work(life)flow, we add another layer of complexity and hence give up even more control to third parties.
I guess this is why Flow has been created, but the catch is the same - once you integrate it, you add another layer of tweaking and twiddling until it all becomes a monster with a life of its own.
There was an article here on HN yesterday - 'you probably don't need any js lib for your project' and I totally agree with the author.
We can live without layers upon layers of complexity, albeit with a bit more 'manual' work - we have to reduce it rather than try to build meta layers on top of existing ones.
Sorry for the gloomy mood, I guess it's the weather.
This is basically IFTTT. Tons of people use IFTTT, even if I have only found a need for it a few times.
'you probably don't need any js lib for your project' is true, but 'I can probably use modern JS libs to write a competitor 5x faster than your from-scratch project, assuming it's at least moderately complex' is also true.
Well, I've always found what you said to be true anyway, gloomy weather or not.
Theres a lot of tech which we are none the worse off for ignoring. The more curmudgeonly of us eventually figure out what is actually going to move the needle and what isn't.
And as a simple rule - nothing will make your life less difficult, it will only give you more spare time which will then be absorbed into work - or your job is redundant.
My original thought was, so its a network drive huh?
But when you think about the fact that everyone has 128GB Surfaces they take everywhere remotely this is really powerful and I can image a lot easier to administer. Love how they have integrated and just added a simple icon. Well done Dropbox
Thats the thing, HT or Gamma without the co-operation of international law enforcement presumably would have a very hard time finding these people in a legal manner. So whats going on up there.
prosecutors have a duty to 'justice' not simply to deliver the strongest result against the defendant. This is why they have to disclose information that suggests innocence.
As long as litigation is of a positive net present value (i.e. expected return is positive) then they have a duty to their shareholders to undertake it. It's just the way of the world, its not like the CEO is taking into account this when thinking of 'the way microsoft should be' its just the state of tech innovation at the moment.
So, they're not illegitimately strongarming people because they want to, only because someone is paying them to do it?
Is that supposed to make it better?
I really hate how people hurry to come up with excuses for corporations and their representatives acting like jerks. They can take responsibility for their actions just like the rest of us.
>>As long as litigation is of a positive net present value (i.e. expected return is positive) then they have a duty to their shareholders to undertake it.
This is a myth that has been debunked many, many times.
Fine. Ignore it. But the OP seems very young based on his decisions, so maybe, just maybe it is worthwhile telling him that the world sometimes is not just. Just because he may have a 'case', doesn't mean anything. It all depends on how important this lawsuit would be to the company. They may be in a funding phase or trying to sell company, and don't want the hassle so they will settle, or they don't want to lose this lawsuit as all the other employees (who may be as naive) would then claim against the company. So you don't know anything about the company, and your statement that I am wrong, is wrong.
